Nationals Wrap-up

First of all congratulations to Amac for winning the 2010 Nationals with a dominant performance. He not only sailed well, but managed to outsmart the rest by designing a boat that showed blistering downwind pace.

It wasn’t a 100% standard Mach 2 either, with custom smaller rudder and nice looking centerboard, he was able to sail 5-10 degrees lower than the rest of the fleet, often leaving us in his wake by the bottom mark.

Andrew Stevenson also sailed well to finish 2nd after a tie on points with myself going into the last race. I suffered with lack of downwind pace but had excellent upwind speed, unfortunately not enough to claim 2nd.

It was an excellent event thanks to John Ilett and Guy Skinner as well as Richard and Chris form WA fleetĀ + other volunteers. Disappointing result for me but thanks to these guys I had a fantastic time, and that’s what counts.

  1. Brief report form amac on sailing anarchy front page:
see full article “Plus Ca Change” at http://www.sailinganarchy.com/index_page1.php

“I was on standard Mach2 gear – although up to the the last day I used a cut down rudder hydrofoil that was possibly slipperier, but I could amost never foil tack. With the standard rudder on the last day I seemed just as quick and got lots of foil tacks. The sail was an out of the box MSL13 – no tweaks, not even to the battens.”

So a bigger rudder foil in marginal conditions, and chopped in heavier? is that the best strategy.

  3. I think the bigger rudder makes for easier foil tacking for sure. Mind you, I don’t put Amacs downwind pace to his small or large rudder. I had a small rudder too (cut down Lister design), I liked his centerboard though…

Also, Amac is a fair bit faster than other Mach 2’s I sailed against in Sydney. Credit to his design skills and ability to get more out of the boat than most. Like at Weymouth when he had the fastest production boat there too. A “special” Bladerider…
