I think the bigger rudder makes for easier foil tacking for sure. Mind you, I don't put Amacs downwind pace to his small or large rudder. I had a small rudder too (cut down Lister design), I liked his centerboard though...

Also, Amac is a fair bit faster than other Mach 2's I sailed against in Sydney. Credit to his design skills and ability to get more out of the boat than most. Like at Weymouth when he had the fastest production boat there too. A "special" Bladerider...

Brief report form amac on sailing anarchy front page:
see full article "Plus Ca Change" at http://www.sailinganarchy.com/index_page1.php

"I was on standard Mach2 gear - although up to the the last day I used a cut down rudder hydrofoil that was possibly slipperier, but I could amost never foil tack. With the standard rudder on the last day I seemed just as quick and got lots of foil tacks. The sail was an out of the box MSL13 - no tweaks, not even to the battens."

So a bigger rudder foil in marginal conditions, and chopped in heavier? is that the best strategy.

How long have you been sailing for?

It worries me that your only finding out now that sailing is good for a hangover!

Perhaps if you'd practiced your hangover sailing then you could have avoided putting a dent in the boat!

The sun was shining and there was good breeze at 4pm.
Excellent sailing weather - we are sailors after all - I didn't get a moth for the committee meetings!
Maybe try after daylight hours next time, the distance didn't help and I haven't renewed my passport.

Thanks for the L-lever link.

gee, coffee mug, or bumper sticker.... naah the dog warmer..

Re-listened to the moth cast, and realized the "Dial" is posted here:
http://scott.projectsomewhere.com/2009/08/05/higher-and-faster/

Bruce has a main foil history http://www.teknologika.com/mothblog/the-evolution-of-moth-main-hydrofoils/

The rudder size comparison thing still eludes me. Interesting item : in that lister video of foiling tacks he throws his weight around at about three minutes - 2/3 in, and basically shakes the (small?) rudder foil into cavitation - it breaks the surface - and he continues on unscathed. Makes the rudder foil/ main foil wash concerns seem almost irrelevant. Focus of rudder and rudder foil is a yaw and pitch control function, not lift... so stay forward let main foil do the heavy lifting would seem to be conclusion?.

fer cryin out loud will some one just post pics of:
- "the dial"
- the lister lever
- the rudder foil variances

Inquiring minds want to know... or all you bridge vs harbour boys and girls in a pissing contest in case someone patents something? Why else be vuisually opaque about it?

I think everyone got the message about the multi d aspect: great sailing skills/ great moth handling/great build-tweak skills etc, and the gorge reminded every one about the need to handle shifts not just starts and laylines.
