Updated St George section

I just updated the St George section of the website with details of boats we expect to register, come rego day on the 13th.

It looks like we will have up to 16 including 13 foilers. Not bad, considering we had a few drop off’s since last season… We are still going to have the largest Moth foiling fleet in the world!

Away in Cairns

I’ve been away to Cairns for the last few days…Nice 26-7 degrees up there at this time of the year, so it’s a good trade in for the current Sydney weather.
Brass Monkey Regatta is on this weekend at SFS, and If I can scam a boat of someone I might do a few races too. If not, St George S.C. AGM will have to keep me entertained…

Harken fittings for the new boat

Got my fittings from Harken this morning and John is back from Vietnam after a successful visit to the new Fastacraft factory, everything is progressing with the new boat nicely.

The deck is now on and foils skins are about to be bonded. Gantry is done and CST tubes for wings have arrived as well… Hopefully it won’t be too long till I get it as I just missed a perfect sailing weather this weekend. 10-15kn SE with flat St George water…

Keeping busy

We’ve been quite busy at ST George… I have been designing foils, Fitting out masts and Booms while Dave has his Moth building project well underway.

Some of you might have heard that he currently has the Alpha/Gilmour mould and he has already popped out 2 shells.

One weighing 4.6kg while the latest one came out at just 4.2kg. They are both wet laid epoxy/200g carbon over 5mm foam core. Laminated and bagged down in one go.

CST Composites has been developing new High Modulus wing tubes with us in 2 options. Elliptical front profile as used on Dave’s boats and smaller diameter round tubes with elliptical compression struts as will be used on my boat.

Here is a few photos I took while at Dave’s place…

John Ilett is also progressing well with my hull and foil skins are also just about done. I think this boat will be quite special with few new ideas and lots of attention being made to small details, while being built by best commercial Moth builder around.

Fastacraft will also be launching a new website in the next month or so, developed by Oneos. It will include all the latest information on the company and it’s new ‘Zero’ design…

Another boat

I bought another boat on Friday… I wonder if i have a ‘Moth collecting’ problem? Maybe I could see somebody with Grant?

This one is actually not for me, but for Kylie. It’s a McFraud design, one of the last ones build out of Fiberglass foam with gelcoat finish. The deck is ply as are the frames, however I think it’s worth doing up.

It’s about 5kg lighter than Kylie’s old boat and probably a slightly faster shape too. Ijust need to find  a St George buyer for her old boat so I can build a Scow umpire there as well.

Designing foils

Over the last few weeks I have been helping Bruce design and 3D model some new foils. They are very conservative design wise, essentially a tweaked NACA63412 section.

The idea was to give Bruce something he can CNC machine on his new toy and get foils for his Moth, that should be as competitive as other current designs.

Here is a few Alias 3D Studio and Rhino renders….
